A small city with many neighborhoods
Culver City incorporated in 1917 and grew up around the film studios; the old MGM lot is now Sony Pictures Studios. Today the city holds a lively downtown, an arts district along Washington Boulevard, and Ballona Creek with its bike path running through the middle. Its boundary zigzags, so a street can switch between Culver City and Los Angeles within a few blocks.
The homes are just as varied: 1920s and 1930s houses on tree-lined streets, mid-century houses on the flats, hillside homes in Blair Hills and Culver Crest, and condo and apartment buildings around Fox Hills.
Older houses, newer kitchens
In the older neighborhoods, many houses keep their original layout, with laundry in a garage or on a service porch and a kitchen updated around the old footprint. A freshly remodeled kitchen may have an induction cooktop, which works very differently from gas. If a zone flashes or won't heat, test the pan with a fridge magnet first; pans a magnet won't stick to don't register.
Many of those older houses have a detached garage down a long driveway, and that's often where the washer and dryer ended up. Detached garages usually aren't insulated, so they swing hot and cold, and a dryer venting through a long run can lose airflow. If drying slows, look at the vent hood outside and the hose behind the machine.
Plenty of original wall ovens and older ranges are still in use too. A photo of the model tag before the visit helps us look into parts, since some older models need them ordered.
Hillside streets and condo buildings
Up in Blair Hills and Culver Crest, streets curve and climb, and driveways can be steep. Tell us where a car can stop and whether there are steps to the door. Down in Fox Hills, most homes are in condo and apartment buildings with gates, garages and elevators. Add the unit number, the entrance and the gate or garage code, and we'll find our way up.
Near downtown, newer apartment and condo buildings have gone up in recent years, most with built-in kitchens and laundry stacked in a closet. Snap the appliance and its model tag; those two pictures show us what you have.
If you rent, ask the owner before you book. The appliance may be theirs, and some owners like to arrange repairs themselves.
Appliance notes for Culver City homes
Washer repair
Condo buildings often put the washer in a closet with a drain box set into the wall. If water backs up there, the building's drain line may be slow rather than the washer.
Cooktop repair
Induction zones only respond to magnetic cookware. If a zone flashes and stays cold, try a pan a fridge magnet sticks to before you book.
Oven & range repair
Original wall ovens in kitchens that were never remodeled can be decades old. A photo of the model tag helps us check whether parts are still made.
Before we come over
- Add your ZIP code when you book. Near the city line, Culver City and Los Angeles addresses sit side by side, and the ZIP helps us confirm the visit.
- For a condo, include the unit number and the gate or garage code.
- On a hillside street, mention steps or a steep driveway.
