Most fridge trouble comes down to how the cold is moving: the airflow, the defrost system, the cooling parts or the controls. A technician checks each one at your home, tells you what failed and what fixing it costs, and then you choose.
Why your fridge is acting up
Safety first
Unplug the fridge before you touch the coils or a back panel. Please don't chip ice off the freezer coil: one slip can puncture it and turn a simple fix into a much bigger one.
Why is the fridge warm while the freezer feels fine?
What's usually behind it
The fridge section is cooled by air from the freezer. If frost has choked the freezer coil after a defrost failure, or the small fan behind the freezer wall has stopped, that air never makes it down.
Try this first
Hold in the freezer door switch: you should hear a fan whir. Move food off the vents. Thick, even frost across the freezer's rear panel usually means defrost has stopped.
Why are both the fridge and the freezer getting warm?
What's usually behind it
Usually it's the cooling parts underneath: dusty condenser coils, a stalled condenser fan or a worn start relay. Less often, it's the compressor or the refrigerant.
Try this first
Unplug the fridge, then vacuum the coils behind the bottom grille or on the back. Put any cover back on before you plug it back in, then listen for the fan near the compressor or feel for warm air at the bottom grille. If the compressor clicks on and off every few minutes, leave it for a technician.
Why is melt water gathering under the crisper drawers?
What's usually behind it
The defrost drain is clogged or frozen, so melt water spills into the fridge instead of draining away.
Try this first
Look for the little drain opening on the rear wall of the fridge section, and flush it with warm water from a turkey baster.
Why did my ice maker stop making ice?
What's usually behind it
The shut-off arm may be raised, the fill tube may be frozen, the water valve may have failed, or the ice maker itself may be worn out.
Try this first
Lower the arm or flip the switch on, check that the water supply valve is open, and give it a full day after any change before you judge.
Why does my fridge run all the time or keep clicking?
What's usually behind it
A door seal that leaks, dirty coils, or tired start parts.
Try this first
Shut the door on a dollar bill at a few spots around the seal. If the bill pulls out with no drag, the seal isn't closing tightly there.
