Fridge warm, freezer cold: finding the cause

Freezer still frozen but the fridge creeping toward 50°F? Four calm checks to tell whether it's airflow, defrost or the controls before you book a repair.

Updated October 7, 2026

Fridges do this a lot, and there's good news hidden in it. If the freezer still holds its cold, the compressor and refrigerant are usually doing their job. What's failing is the delivery of that cold to the fridge side.

Where the fridge gets its cold

In most refrigerators, the only cooling coil sits in the freezer. A small fan pushes air across it, and a duct sends part of that air down into the fridge. Ice on the coil, a stopped fan or a stuck damper all block that air, so the fridge warms up while the freezer seems fine.

Step 1: Start with the simple things

  • Make sure the fridge dial or setting hasn't been nudged.
  • Pull food back from the vents on the freezer wall and the fridge ceiling.
  • Set a glass of water on a middle shelf and take its temperature a few hours later. Anything above 40°F is too warm.

Step 2: Listen for the fan

Open the freezer and hold the door switch down with a finger. You should hear or feel the evaporator fan running. If it's silent, the fan motor or the power reaching it is the likely problem.

Step 3: Check the back wall for frost

A thick, even coat of frost across the freezer's back panel means the automatic defrost has stopped working. The coil behind it has iced over, and air can't get through. Defrost relies on a heater, a thermostat or sensor, and a timer or control board, and any one of them can fail.

Step 4: Try a manual defrost as a test

Move the food into coolers, unplug the fridge and leave both doors open for 24 hours with towels on the floor. If it cools normally for a few days and then warms up again, that confirms a defrost fault. Think of it as a test, not a repair.

When to stop and get help

Please don't chip ice off the coil. One slip can puncture it and turn a part swap into a sealed-system repair. If your food is at risk, move the perishables first, then book a visit, or read about refrigerator repair to see what we check.
